Android 16, the next major update for Android devices, is reportedly launching in June.
A company official reportedly shared this at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona.
As per the report of Android Police, at MWC 2025, the President of Android Ecosystem at Google, Sameer Samat, told the publication that Android 16 and other Android updates are set for an earlier release this year. He mentioned that due to challenges in Android development, Google has switched to a trunk-stable development approach. It is a development model where developers can make small and frequent changes to a single shared code branch.
This approach is said to streamline the integration and merging phases during the development process, helping in speeding up the software release compared to the traditional feature-based method. The publication cited the Google official stating, “Trunk Stable development ensures that all Android developers are working on a single shared code branch.”
Google has only rolled out the second developer beta of Android 16 so far; the update is still expected to launch on schedule in June 2025.
As per the previous reports, Android 16 will be added to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on June 3. This will let the developers create a custom version of the OS for their devices and prepare it for release. This aligns with a previous leaked timeline, which suggested that Android 16 would first be available on Google Pixel smartphones in the second quarter of this year.
This update builds upon the release of Android 16 Beta 2.1 for developers and beta testers. Although it didn’t add any new features, it fixed some major issues affecting the device’s performance, like connectivity, system stability, and overall speed.
