Key takeaways

  • The free year lasts 12 months from each user’s own redemption date, not a common end date.
  • Accounts that claimed on 4 November 2025 reach the end of the free period in early November 2026.
  • After the free period, ChatGPT Go renews at the regular price, which was Rs 399 a month at launch.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Uninstalling the app does not cancel the plan.

ChatGPT Go’s free year in India runs for 12 months from the date each user redeemed it. Accounts activated on 4 November 2025 therefore reach the end of the offer in early November 2026. After that, the plan renews at the regular price, which was Rs 399 a month at launch, unless the user cancels first.

What is the ChatGPT Go free offer in India?

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go in India on 18 August 2025 at Rs 399 a month, with UPI payments supported. On 4 November 2025, it made the plan free for one year for users in India. The offer covered new users, free-tier users and existing Go subscribers.

Redeeming it required adding a payment method, either a credit card or UPI, even though nothing was charged during the 12 months. UPI users could see a temporary Rs 1 charge each billing cycle, which was refunded, according to Business Today.

OpenAI describes Go as a low-cost plan with higher limits than the free tier for image generation, file uploads and data analysis, plus longer memory. It also includes projects, tasks and custom GPTs, subject to availability.

What does ChatGPT Go include compared with the free plan?

When Go launched in India, OpenAI said it offered about 10 times the message limits, image generations and file uploads of the free tier, along with twice the memory length. The company later said India is one of its largest markets, and the free year was announced ahead of its DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, according to TechCrunch.

Feature Free Go
Message limits Standard Higher
Image generation Limited Higher limits
File uploads and data analysis Limited Higher limits
Memory Short Longer
Projects, tasks and custom GPTs Restricted Available, with limits

When does the ChatGPT Go free year end?

There is no single end date for everyone. The 12 months are counted from the day your account redeemed the offer, so the date to watch is the one shown in your own billing settings.

Some websites quote a common cut-off date in December 2026. We could not find that date in OpenAI’s published help pages, so it is better to rely on the renewal date inside your account. Existing Go subscribers on the web or Google Play who did not cancel had their billing date extended by 12 months. Apple App Store subscribers were told to cancel and re-subscribe after their billing cycle ended.

How much does ChatGPT Go cost in India after the free period?

Go was launched in India at Rs 399 a month. Prices can change, and OpenAI’s help page says plan prices are listed on its pricing page, so check the amount shown in the app before the renewal date. The table below lists the prices announced when Go launched.

Plan India price per month Note
Free Rs 0 Limited messages, uploads and image generation
Go Rs 399 Launch price, August 2025; free for 12 months under the November 2025 offer
Plus Rs 1,999 Price at the time of the Go launch

OpenAI’s help page also says it may test ads in ChatGPT Go in future. Users who pay for Go should keep that in mind when deciding whether to continue.

How to cancel ChatGPT Go before you are charged

OpenAI advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the next billing date. The steps depend on where you subscribed.

  1. Web: Sign in at chatgpt.com, open Settings, go to Billing and select Cancel under Cancel plan.
  2. iPhone: Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, select ChatGPT and tap Cancel Subscription.
  3. Android: Open the Play Store with the Google account used for the purchase, go to Subscriptions, select ChatGPT and choose Cancel subscription.

Uninstalling the app or deleting your account does not cancel a subscription billed through Apple or Google. UPI users should also open the AutoPay section of their UPI app and check whether a mandate for ChatGPT is still active.

What happens if you cancel ChatGPT Go early?

Reports differ on this point. Business Today wrote that cancelling during the free year ends access immediately and that the offer cannot be redeemed again on the same account. OpenAI’s general help page says paid features stay until the end of the current billing period.

Given the difference, it is safer to cancel close to the end of the free period rather than months ahead. Set a calendar reminder a few days before the renewal date shown in your account.

Should you keep paying for ChatGPT Go?

The free plan remains available, so cancelling does not mean losing ChatGPT. Go is worth keeping only if you regularly hit the free limits on messages, image creation or file uploads.

Other AI offers aimed at Indian users launched around the same time. Google AI Pro was offered free for 18 months to Jio customers through the MyJio app, and Perplexity Pro was offered free for one year to Airtel customers through Airtel Thanks. Eligibility and availability can change, so check both apps for the current status.

Offer Duration Who could claim Where to claim
ChatGPT Go 12 months Users in India ChatGPT web and app
Google AI Pro 18 months Jio customers, first aged 18 to 25 on unlimited 5G, then extended to all Jio users MyJio app
Perplexity Pro 12 months Airtel customers Airtel Thanks app

The Jio offer was described by Free Press Journal as worth Rs 35,100 and includes 2TB of cloud storage. These offers were announced in late 2025, so confirm that each is still open before relying on it.

OpenAI has added other features for Indian users in the past, such as ChatGPT access through WhatsApp and a search feature open to everyone. Plan limits and features are updated from time to time, so recheck what Go includes before you decide.

What to check in your account this week

  • The renewal date under Settings and Billing on the web.
  • The payment method linked to the account: card, UPI or app store.
  • Whether you subscribed through the web, Google Play or the App Store, since each has its own cancel route.
  • The price displayed before renewal, since it may differ from Rs 399.
