OpenAI has announced the latest updates for its Canvas feature. Now, the feature supports the O1 AI model and is being added to the ChatGPT app for macOS across all the user tiers. The Canvas pop-up window was introduced in October 2024 in early beta, and after that, it became available to all users in December 2024.
The AI company took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce the same. Earlier, only paid users could use the O1 AI model for general output, but it wasn’t available in Canvas. But now, users who subscribed to ChatGPT Plus, Teams, or Pro plans can use Canvas with the O1 model.
Canvas update: today we’re rolling out a few highly-requested updates to canvas in ChatGPT.
✅Canvas now works with OpenAI o1—Select o1 from the model picker and use the toolbox icon or the “/canvas” command

Users need to select the AI model from the model picker to use the O1 model with Canvas. Then, by using the “/canvas” command or the toolbox icon, they can access the Canvas interface with O1 features.
Now, Canvas is also available on the desktop app of ChatGPT for macOS. Notably, both paid and free users can use Canvas, but free users won’t have access to the O1 model. Previously, this feature was only for the web version, and OpenAI hasn’t mentioned plans to bring it to mobile or Windows apps yet.
Canvas is getting an update to support HTML and React code. The tool will not only support these coding languages but also the existing support for languages like JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, and PHP. However, the support for HTML and React is currently only available to paid subscribers.
OpenAI also announced that enterprise and education subscribers will get access to both the O1 model and HTML/React rendering in the next few weeks.
