Google Messages is likely to introduce a feature that allows users to start WhatsApp video calls directly from the app.
As per the report by Android Authority, Google Messages might soon integrate WhatsApp video calls feature into Google Messages. The feature was spotted in Google Messages version 20250131. A hidden setting in the app’s code was activated, but it’s not yet available for users to try.
As per the screenshots shared by the publication, Google Messages shows a prompt that suggests that users can make video calls through WhatsApp when they tap the video call icon. However, this only happens if Google Meet is not installed.
Currently, video calls in Google Messages can only be made through Meet. If users don’t have Meet installed on their device, the app asks users to download it first.
This new feature will open WhatsApp video calls directly on the full screen instead of taking users to the messaging app. This can make video calling faster and more convenient for those who use Google Messages as their main messaging app.
This feature only works for one-on-one chats, as per the report. If users want to have a group chat that can only be possible via Google Meet. Also, if the other person doesn’t have WhatsApp installed, Google Messages won’t show the WhatsApp video call option.
However, Google hasn’t officially unveiled this feature yet.
