Google is replacing Google Assistant with its AI-powered Gemini for Android users. The company announced the development on Friday. The company stated that later this year, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for download from app stores, as per the blog post. This change will also apply to tablets, Android Auto, and accessories like headphones and earphones. AI-powered Gemini features are also coming to smart home devices like speakers, displays, and TVs.
Gemini AI has been available for Android users for some time. Users with compatible devices could choose it as the default assistant and enjoy its advanced features. However, it was optional, letting users use Google Assistant if they preferred the older experience. In the coming days, Gemini will be the only default assistant on Android devices, meaning users will no longer have the option to keep Google Assistant.
The Google Assistant was launched in 2016. It was designed for voice-based interactions. Now the company is reimaging the experience with AI at its core to make Gemini a personal, AI-powered assistant, said Brian Marquardt, Senior Director of Product Management for the Gemini app at Google in a blog post.
By the end of the year, Google Assistant will no longer work on most devices and won’t be available for download. It may only remain on devices that don’t support AI features. The company will share more details in the next few months.
