Key takeaways

  • Indian tech companies raised $10.3 billion from January to 21 September 2026, up 7% year on year.
  • Funding rounds fell 38% to 1,134, and seed funding dropped 37% to $698 million.
  • Early-stage funding rose 27% to $4.2 billion; late-stage was $5.4 billion.
  • India got six new unicorns, up from four, and 29 tech IPOs.
  • Bengaluru took 43% of all funding at $4.4 billion.

Indian tech companies raised $10.3 billion between 1 January and 21 September 2026, up 7% from $9.7 billion in the same period of 2025, according to data platform Tracxn. But the number of funding rounds fell 38%, from 1,838 to 1,134. In short, investors are writing bigger cheques to fewer companies, and early founders are feeling the squeeze.

Seed funding is the clear loser

Seed rounds dropped to $698 million, down 37%. Only 338 companies raised money for the first time, 30% fewer than last year. For a founder with an idea and a prototype, this is the toughest market in years.

Early-stage funding went the other way, rising 27% to $4.2 billion. Investors seem happy to back companies that already have revenue and a working product, and much less keen to take a bet at the very start.

Where the money went

Enterprise software took the biggest share. Enterprise applications raised $3.5 billion, up 49%. Enterprise infrastructure jumped to $1.6 billion from $292 million a year ago, and AI infrastructure alone attracted $1.2 billion, the most of any single segment.

  • Fintech: $2.2 billion, up 13%. Digital lending raised $799 million and payments $773 million.
  • Biggest rounds: data centre firm Nxtra raised $1 billion, AI cloud company Neysa raised $600 million in its Series B, and CRED raised $540 million in a Series H.
  • Mega rounds: 18 rounds were worth $100 million or more.

Bengaluru pulls further ahead

Bengaluru companies raised $4.4 billion, or 43% of the total, up from a 38% share last year. Mumbai followed with $1.8 billion. Gurugram rose to $1.6 billion, mostly because of Nxtra’s single $1 billion round. Delhi’s share fell from 15% to 4%.

IPOs held steady, acquisitions fell

There were 29 tech IPOs, the same as in each of the previous two years. Fractal Analytics, Molbio Diagnostics and Amagi were the largest by market value at listing, and Shiprocket also went public. For a recent example of a listing, see our coverage of the Moneyview IPO.

Acquisitions fell 31% to 91 deals. The largest were L’Oreal’s purchase of Innovist for $434 million, Adani Energy Solutions buying IntelliSmart for $319 million and upGrad acquiring Unacademy for $218 million.

What this means for Indian founders

  • Show revenue early. With seed money down 37% and early-stage money up 27%, the gap is between a pitch and a paying customer. Getting to first revenue before raising is now the safer route.
  • Enterprise and AI infrastructure are where investors are looking. Consumer apps without a clear business model will find it harder.
  • Growth is getting rewarded faster. Tracxn says this year’s new unicorns reached a $1 billion valuation about 4.9 years after their Series A, down from 6.6 years.
  • Plan for longer runways. Fewer rounds means longer gaps between raises. Budget for 18 to 24 months, not 12.

Globally, India ranks fifth among the most-funded tech markets in 2026, behind the US, China, the UK and Singapore, and ahead of Germany and France. The total is healthy. The spread is not, and that is the number early-stage founders should watch in the last quarter of the year.
