Google Photos is reportedly testing new features that will allow users to identify artificial intelligence-generated or AI-manipulated photos easily.
Android Authority has discovered this feature within the APK code of the Google Photos app.
They found some clues in version 7.3 of the app indicating that it will soon be able to identify AI-generated images. This means users will be able to spot whether the photo was generated through AI tools or not.
Three specific ID strings—’@id/ai_info,’ ‘@id/credit,’ and ‘@id/digital_source_type’—were spotted by Android Authority within XML code.
The ‘@id/credit’ ID resource might display the image’s credit tag.
For example, photos created through Google Gemini often feature a ‘Made with Google AI’ credit tag and can be seen in EXIF information of AI-centric photos. Similarly, Google Photos has its own tags.
Tags like ‘AI-Generated with Google Photos’ and ‘AI-Generated with Google’ appear when using the Magic Editor.
According to the report, the XML code featuring the ‘@id/digital_source_type’ ID resource refers to the Digital Source Type field, which identifies the media source used to create the digital image.
Android Authority also discovered a reference to the ‘compositeWithTrainedAlgorithmicMedia’ value, which Google Photos uses when a picture is rectified or enhanced with a Generative AI model. This modification is not yet visible on Google Photos.
