Google has started rolling out Android 16 Beta 2 to developers and testers. This test version offers features to improve camera performance, including hybrid auto-exposure mode and UltraHDR HEIC photos. It also includes new privacy improvements.
The final version is said to be launched for eligible Google Pixel phones in the second quarter of 2025.
Developers can use the latest hybrid auto-exposure mode. This will allow them to adjust auto-exposure while also changing exposure time and ISO, improving the experience for pro users.
Android 16 also brings better white balance control for professional video recording apps. With the new COLOR_CORRECTION_MODE_CCT, apps can make precise adjustments based on color temperature.
Previously, white balance was controlled using CONTROL_AWB_MODE, which only had preset options like Incandescent, Cloudy, and Twilight.
Google claims that it added two new intent actions to Android 16 which will allow apps to capture motion photos. The company also said that they are also working on bringing the same support for AVIF images in the future.
This will also include new security measures to block intent redirection attacks. To enhance the immersive experience, developers will no longer have the option to disable edge-to-edge display mode.
As per the company, apps designed for Android 16 will also need granular permissions to access health data from Health Connect instead of using the BODY_SENSORS permission. This latest version also includes a key-sharing API, which will allow apps on the same device to share access to keys stored in the Android Keystore.
