To enhance security against phone theft, Google has begun rolling out new Theft Protection features for devices running Android 10 and above.
According to reports, these features are said to be rolled out through Google Play Services, designed to protect personal data in the event of phone theft.
The company first announced these features at Google I/O, an annual developer conference held by Google.
The three major features include Theft detection lock, Offline device lock, and Remote lock.
The Theft Detection lock feature uses sensors, Wi-Fi, and connections to smart devices to identify if someone unexpectedly takes your unlocked phone while it’s in use. In case of such activity, the phone itself gets locked to prevent access to your valuable data.
Offline Device lock is a feature designed to protect your device even when it is not connected to the internet. Another security measure is that if Wi-Fi or mobile data are turned off to avoid tracking the thief, the device locks immediately.
Whereas Remote lock allows you to lock your device remotely. For instance
If your phone gets stolen, you can go to android.com/lock to secure your device. This feature lets you enter your phone number and set up a security challenge for swift action.
Currently, users in the U.S who are enrolled in the Google Play services beta (version 24.40.33) have access to all three theft detection features, with a complete rollout anticipated shortly.
