Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the plans to develop India’s own generative AI model at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave.
This will be supported by the India AI Compute Facility, which has secured 18,000 GPUs to develop a Large Language Model (LLM) designed specifically for India’s requirements.
The IT minister also revealed plans to set up AI data centers in Odisha. These centers will help strengthen India’s AI ecosystem and digital infrastructure. The Government is actively investing in developing AI research and infrastructure.
The aim is to reduce reliance on foreign models and build a self-sufficient digital system. The India AI Compute Facility plays an important role in this effort by providing powerful computing resources for AI development in the country.
Odisha is positioned as an important center for AI development in the government’s announcement. This is part of India’s plan to expand technology infrastructure beyond big cities.
Having the country’s own generative AI model could offer improved data security, support local languages, and provide better control over regulations compared to foreign AI platforms. The Government is encouraging the use of AI in sectors such as healthcare, governance, education, and finance.
ChatGPT by OpenAI and DeepSeek from China are the major players in this sector. India’s Large Language Model is expected to compete with ChatGPT and DeepSeek by focusing on AI solutions designed for Indian users and improving digital access across the country.
