Sony is reportedly working on a portable console that enables users to play PlayStation 5 from anywhere. The company is in the ‘early stages’ of the development process, according to Bloomberg’s report.
The aim is to make games more accessible by allowing games to be played directly.
The company is developing portable consoles to directly compete with one of the major players, Nintendo, in the portable gaming market. Nintendo is likely to launch the successor to its Switch console next year.
This could also put the company in competition with Microsoft’s Xbox, as Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has also expressed interest in entering the handheld gaming market.
He also confirmed that Xbox is developing prototypes in the same category, according to the report. However, Sony’s portable gaming device is expected to launch years later.
Sony launched PlayStation Portal in November 2023. This wirelessly streams PS5 games from the cloud, but only when it is connected to a parent PS5 console. The device requires a high-speed Wi-Fi connection and cannot run PS5 games directly.
