Google is introducing the latest feature to Google Drive that will help users to navigate videos more efficiently. The feature, dubbed video transcripts, is an upgrade to the company’s automatic captions feature, which was introduced in July of last year.
As per the blog post, Drive users can now view and search transcripts for their videos. The transcript is displayed in a sidebar next to the video player and shows the spoken text. This new feature makes it easy to find specific moments, follow along with the content, or jump directly to the part of the video the user needs.
It includes timestamps, with each sentence listed separately. To help users find the exact moment in the video, there is also a search bar. Clicking on a sentence will take the video to that timestamp, making it easy for users to find important parts. The video must have captions to access this feature.
To add captions to a video, users can follow these steps.
Right-click the video in Drive> select Manage caption tracks > generate automatic captions.
Users can also generate captions when the video is playing by going to the three-dot menu located in the top right > manage captions tracks > generate automatic captions.
To access video transcripts, open a video with captions in Google Drive > tap the gear icon located at the bottom right corner of the video to go to the settings > select ‘Transcript.’
It is available to all Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google account users.
