Key takeaways
- Aadhaar email updates in the app are free from 1 July to 31 December 2026, per a UIDAI memorandum.
- Mobile number updates in the Aadhaar app cost Rs 75 and need two face authentication checks.
- The new Aadhaar app is a separate install, and mAadhaar data does not carry over.
- Name, date of birth and biometric changes still need an Aadhaar Seva Kendra visit.
You can update the email address linked to your Aadhaar for free in the Aadhaar app until 31 December 2026. UIDAI has waived the usual Rs 75 fee for this service from 1 July 2026. Mobile number updates in the app are also possible, but they are not free and cost Rs 75.
What can you update in the new Aadhaar app?
UIDAI’s new Aadhaar app is a separate install, not an automatic update of mAadhaar, according to Croma. The older mAadhaar app is being phased out. Saved profiles, family links, downloaded e-Aadhaar PDFs and biometric lock settings do not carry over and have to be set up again.
In the new app you can add or change the email address and the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. Face authentication is used for identity checks, and the app supports up to five profiles on one device.

The app works on Android 9.0 and above and iOS 16.0 and above, as reported by Angel One.

| Update | Fee | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email address | Free from 1 July to 31 December 2026 (normally Rs 75) | Aadhaar app only | UIDAI office memorandum dated 18 June 2026 |

How to update your email address in the Aadhaar app
Keep your phone and the email inbox you want to link ready, since you will need to enter a code sent to that address. Follow these steps, as described by DT Next.
- Install the latest version of the Aadhaar app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Open the app and sign in with your Aadhaar details and OTP.
- Select Add/Update Email ID.
- Enter the email address you want to link.
- Enter the OTP sent to that email address to verify it.
- Complete face authentication when the app asks for it.
- Finish the remaining verification and submit the request.
DT Next reports that an email update takes nearly 15 days to process. No fee is charged for this update until 31 December 2026.

How to update your mobile number in the Aadhaar app
This route is meant for people who no longer use the number linked to their Aadhaar, or whose Aadhaar is tied to a relative’s number. Before this feature, a mobile number change needed a visit to an enrolment centre with biometric verification.
The steps below follow the process reported by Onmanorama and Business Today. Menu names can differ slightly between app versions.
- Open the Aadhaar app and sign in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP you receive.
- Complete the face scan when prompted, following on-screen instructions such as blinking.
- Tap Services, then My Aadhaar Update.
- Choose Mobile Number Update and enter the new number under the new number details.
- Verify the new number with the OTP sent to it.
- Complete a second face authentication.
- Pay the Rs 75 fee online and submit the request.
Once the request is processed, Aadhaar OTPs and notifications go to the new number. Onmanorama reported that processing can take up to 30 days, while the other sources we checked gave no timeline. Check the request status inside the app.
How to set up the new Aadhaar app first
If you still use mAadhaar, install the new app before attempting either update. Croma describes the set-up as follows.
- Download the app named Aadhaar, published by UIDAI, from the Play Store or App Store.
- Sign in with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and complete the OTP verification.
- Set up face authentication when the app prompts you.
- Add family members again if needed. The app supports up to five profiles.
- Turn the biometric lock back on manually, since the earlier setting does not transfer.
This sign-in step needs an OTP on your registered number. If that number is inactive, the app route may not work smoothly, and Kissht’s guide says some cases can need in-person verification.
What should you check before submitting an update?
- Confirm the app is the official UIDAI app and is on the latest version.
- Check the new number or email address twice, since a typing error sends OTPs to the wrong place.
- Keep the new number switched on and in your phone, as the OTP goes to it.
- Use good lighting and hold the phone steady for face authentication.
- Note the request number and track the status inside the app after submission.
What can you not update in the Aadhaar app?
DT Next reports that name, date of birth, gender and biometric updates, along with some document updates, still need a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Address updates can be made online, either in the app or through the myAadhaar portal. Our guide on how to update the address on your Aadhaar card covers the portal route and accepted documents, though its free-update dates are from an earlier period.
If your old number is inactive, Kissht’s guide notes that you may still be asked to verify your identity at a nearby Aadhaar service point in some cases.
Why should you keep your Aadhaar mobile number and email updated?
Aadhaar OTPs go to the registered mobile number, so a number that is switched off or no longer yours can block e-KYC, downloads and other services that depend on OTP verification. An email address linked to Aadhaar gives UIDAI another channel for notifications.
A current number also helps when you use government services that sit on top of Aadhaar. For example, DigiLocker and UMANG both rely on a working registered number, as we covered in our report on the DigiLocker and UMANG integration.
The waiver applies to every Aadhaar number holder who updates an email through the app between 1 July and 31 December 2026. After that date the Rs 75 fee is expected to apply again unless UIDAI extends the offer. If you plan to add an email address, do it before the deadline.
