BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) has unveiled India’s first satellite-to-device service. It aims to provide seamless connectivity even to the most remote parts of the county.
To achieve this, BSNL has teamed up with Viasat, a US-based satellite communications company.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) posted a video, while officially announcing the launch on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The service will be available for all users. Earlier, this service was only available for emergency and military use.
Even in the most remote areas or places where network connection or WiFi is unavailable, users will still be able to make emergency calls and send SMS.
BSNL and Viasat first showcased the service at IMC 2024 in October. At the IMC, the company used a commercial Android mobile with non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity to send a text to a satellite at an altitude of about 36,000 kilometers above Earth orbit.
However, BSNL hasn’t disclosed more details yet, such as how users can access the service, if it will be part of current plans or need a separate pack, and other important information.
