During the highly anticipated event ‘We, Robot’ in California, Elon Musk revealed three innovative Tesla products on Thursday night.
Musk arrived on the event’s stage in a driverless ‘Cybercab’, which Tesla planned to launch during the event at the Warren Bros. Studio.
Other products that were unveiled during the event include a Robovan that can hold up to 20 people and Tesla’s latest generation humanoid robots. It was live-streamed with more than 3.6 million viewers at the peak moment.
At the event, Tesla provided 20 two-door fully autonomous Cybercabs to shuttle guests around the studio, while Optimus humanoid robots were handling guests by serving drinks and playing rock-paper-scissors with them.
The two-door ‘Cybercab’ is designed without a steering wheel, pedals, or charging port. This electric vehicle boasts inductive charging capabilities and features gull-wing doors.
Musk did not provide the details about where Tesla plans to manufacture the vehicles, but he mentioned that consumers will be able to purchase a Tesla Cybercab for under $30,000.
The company aims to begin production of the Cybercab before 2027, he said.
He mentioned that the Cybercab and Robovan will use wireless charging, so these self-driving vehicles can recharge without needing to be plugged in.
Musk also mentioned that he expects Tesla to have ‘unsupervised Full Self-Driving’ for its Model 3 and Model Y electric cars by next year.
FSD is Tesla’s top-tier driver assistance system, which is now available in a ‘supervised’ version. This means that a human driver still needs to be in control, ready to steer or brake if necessary.
Musk said that he expects Tesla’s Optimus robots, which don’t have faces, to cost less than a car—around $20,000 to $30,000—making them affordable for many people.
