LG Display, the innovator of display technologies, has unveiled the stretchable display. It can be stretched up to 50%.
The company introduced this highly Stretchable display at LG Science Park in Seoul during a meeting of more than 100 South Korean industry, academia, and research stakeholders involved in a Stretchable display national project.
The new prototype has a 12-inch screen that extends to 18 inches while maintaining a high resolution of 100ppi (pixels per inch) and full red, green, and blue (RGB) color.
It is free-form screen technology as it can be freely transformed into any shape, and size by stretching, folding, and twisting.
According to the company’s blog post, the new panel’s maximum elongation rate has more than doubled from 20% to 50%, compared to the first Stretchable display prototype, which was unveiled in 2022. The company claimed that to improve the panel’s stretchability and a higher elongation rate, they applied several new technologies, such as enhancing the properties of a special silicon material substrate used in contact lenses and developing a new wiring design structure.
As per the company, the new prototype uses micro-LED light sources of up to 40μm (micrometers) to strengthen durability. It can be repeatedly stretched over 10,000 times, maintaining clear image quality even in extreme environments such as exposure to low or high temperatures and external shocks.
Stretchable displays are not only thin and lightweight; they can also adhere to irregularly curved surfaces such as clothing and skin. They are expected to find widespread use in a variety of industries, including fashion, wearables, and mobility.
