WhatsApp is reportedly working on a UPI Lite functionality for its users, making it more like Google Pay and PhonePe. This will be added alongside WhatsApp’s existing UPI payments.
This feature was first discovered by Android Authority after analyzing the WhatsApp beta app version 2.25.5.17. This includes strings for the UPI Lite payment functionality, which suggests that the feature could be in testing at the moment.
The strings within the app suggest that WhatsApp UPI Lite payments will work smoothly even during high server traffic, with fewer failures.
This feature will also allow users to make quick low-value payments without entering a PIN, as per the report. The code strings also suggest that users may also be capable of adding and withdrawing money anytime from the instant messaging platform. However, the UPI Lite will only work on the main device and not on linked devices.
Right now, WhatsApp doesn’t support UPI Lite payments, but it might add the feature soon, just like Samsung Wallet, PhonePe, GPay, and others.
