NVIDIA, a chipmaking giant, is planning to launch its new generation of compact computers for humanoid robots in the first half of 2025, as reported by the Financial Times. It is named Jetson Thor.
Deepu Talla, NVIDIA’s Vice President of Robotics, said to reporters during a press conference in Tokyo last month that NVIDIA’s strategy is not to compete with companies like Tesla. The company aims to be a major supplier for robot makers around the world.
The shift toward robotics is driven by two key advancements: the rise of generative AI models and the ability to train robots using these models in virtual environments.
During his discussion with Financial Times, Talla highlighted these elements as the key reasons behind NVIDIA’s entry into the robotics domain.
This move is a way for NVIDIA to stay successful as big companies like Google and Amazon work on their own AI chips to reduce their dependence on NVIDIA.
Earlier, the company unveiled its Jetson Orion Nano Super supercomputer, which is priced at $250. It offers a performance of 67 TOPS.
