WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow users to make bill payments via the messaging platform.
This was discovered by Android Authority during the APK teardown. The feature was found in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.3.15. This indicates that WhatsApp is looking forward to growing its financial services in India.
As per the report, this feature may allow users to make direct bill payments through WhatsApp. This feature could support payments for electricity, mobile recharges, LPG, water, landline, and even rent.
The feature is under development, but a placeholder for it has already been added to the beta version of WhatsApp, as per the report. The company hasn’t released a timeline yet, but it’s expected to be available to beta testers in India before being included in the stable version.
It is said that the messaging platform might face some regulatory or logistical hurdles before introducing the service in India.
WhatsApp currently allows users to make UPI payments to contacts and businesses. This feature was discovered after NPCI removed the limit on user registrations for WhatsApp Pay.
